The Bombay High Court questioned the state government as to why it does not issue direction to all school to ensure that students do not have to carry heavy bags. The court heard a public interest litigation by Swati Patil on reducing the weight of school bags and for making lockers available for children, a single notebook for joint subjects like algebra and geometry and keeping book materials for subjects like drawing, work experience, physical education and computers at school.
Carrying heavy bags from an early age adversely affects a child’s body structure, thus bringing a change in neck, head, spinal cord, arm structure. Thus it becomes necessary for schools to have a check on the weight of the school bags and keeping it to a minimum weight.
