CBSE 2016-50% rise in students opting for CBSE for Std XII in Maharashtra has been observed this year. Over the last five years, the number of students in the state opting for senior secondary (class XII) in schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has increased by more than 50%

Students are opting for CBSE schools as they focus more on competitive exams, which helps students, conclude experts. In 2012, as many as 9,996 students appeared for the class XII exams in Maharashtra, which eventually increased up to 15,071 this year. The number of schools in the state that offered class XII increased from 163 to 253 within a few years.

There has been an upward trend in city schools as the number of students prefer to continue with the board after Class X. For example, R N Podar School, Santacruz, the number of students who appeared for the class XII exams this year was 428, far up from last year’s 720. Avnita Bir, the Principal, said, “It is a combination of all that is keeping children back with the schools. The curriculum, the flexibility our school offers is very important for these two years (class XI and XII) because schools take individual care of every child. Parents have realized that and hence want the children to continue at school.” “Another big reason for this is that students are now more geared towards entrance exams,” she added. Jose Kurien, western regional director, DAV Public schools, said “Earlier, the common perception was that CBSE is much tougher and higher in level of difficulty but that has changed now. It was an unnecessary fear that people had about the curriculum. The curriculum gives students a lot of choices to select from. Students have realized this; have better re -sources and so opt to continue with the CBSE for senior secondary.”

CBSE also provides the students an edge while preparing for national-level entrance exams which are largely based on the NCERT books. . Anjali Bowen, principal, Ryan International School, Kandivli said “The trend was seen about two years back when students started focusing on entrance exams. At our school, most students continue for class XII and we have students coming from the ICSE board as well. Only those students who are certain that they do not want to take the national level entrances opt out of CBSE and move to other boards.”
