Chess Wizards make a mark at The Telegraph Schools’ Chess Tournament. Arpita Mukherjee, a student of Class VIII of Shahid Rameshwar Balika Vidyamandir was the only girl in the top 10 at the tournament organised by Alekhine Chess Club. Arpita finished eighth after losing out on crucial points against the eventual winner Diptayan Ghosh in the final match. She had just returned playing another tournament and was not even sure if she was supposed to play this one or not. Her mother encouraged her and asked her to go forward with the match as only good things were supposed to come out of it. Arpita is an ardent follower of the games of Magnus Carlsen and Dibyendu Barua. She plays at the Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy and harbours a dream of becoming a Grand Master coming year. She said that she had participated in this competition a number of times and this year the experience was exhilarating like other years. She has been playing chess for 12 years and has developed liking for the game when she was 4 years old only.
While Diptayan Guha bagged the top spot, Mitrabha Guha, Class IX of South Point High School came second and Kaustuv Kundu, Class XI of Patha Bhavan came third. South Point High School took home the best team award.
