Youngsters and all residents of Govandi have joined hands to celebrate Edufest, a three-day event which aimed at instilling the importance and need of education among the community. Govandi is closely located to Mumbai’s biggestdump yardand has one of the lowest human development indexes of the city. The locality is a preferred destination for the migrants who come to Mumbai for a living. With over 60 percent Muslim population, more than half of the schools in Govandi are Urdu medium. These schools have a high dropout rate. The idea behind Edufest was to instil the importance of education in children coming from poor families. As a part of the fest, a string of competitions for pre-primary, primary, middle, secondary and higher secondary were held, such as essay writing, elocution, painting, mono acting, folk dance, story-telling and fancy dress competition. Nearly 3000 students from local schools participated in the fest. A teacher from BMC School said that he believes such events will build confidence in students.
