That’s right. Chayan Sarkar of Netaji High School, Siliguri , whose aggregate marks in Arts stream was 467 in the Higher Secondary Examination 2016, could only manage one meal per day, that too with much difficulty. Being a senior student of class 12, he wasn’t entitled to a mid-day meal, but thanks to his teachers most of the days, he managed to get a meal for himself. Chayan’s mother works as a housemaid, and that’s the only income for the family. His father left them when he was 4 years old, and ever since, he lived with his mom. So pathetic is their condition that often they have to do without food at night.

But, determination and merit brought Chayan the well-deserved success of which he was in dire need of. Now Chayan wants to pursue English for higher studies in Jadavpur University. His marks in English is 92. Apart from that, he also got a 90 in Bengali, a 99 in Philosophy, 94 in Political Science and 92 in History. Even though his mother is illiterate, she is ever supportive of her son’s academic career. She informed how Chayan used to earn money by teaching students in his colony after his madhyamik. As food was not at his disposal, he used to go to his neighbours and beg them for the water that is left over after cooking rice. That would suffice his hunger for a few hours. She also said that just as the teachers and others have guided Chayan till now, she is confident that they will continue to do so in the future.

With his hopes set high, Chayan Sarkar’s life is airborne after his success in HS. Not only does his story give us goosebumps, but is a glowing example of the saying—When there is a will, there is always a way.
