IIT Kharagpur and Kolkata Police have come up with a system to help ease the traffic before and after school hours. Faculty and research scholars of civil engineering, computer science and IT got together to find solutions to daily traffic mess. A GPS system, similar to that of app cabs like OLA and Uber has been developed that will be connected through RFID chips and barcodes to kids’ school ID cards. Through a free mobile app downloaded on their smartphones, parents can track their children on the school bus or the pool car till it reaches the school. Similar can be done after school gets over and the child boards the school bus.
The project will be starting with a selected fleet of shared cars and school buses of South Point School. With 12500 children, it has the largest number of students in the city and thereby the traffic congestion around the school is maximum. This was revealed during a survey done by IIT Kharagpur experts, comparing about 10 schools. Among the other schools are La Martiniere for Boys and Girls, St. Xavier’s School, Birla High School Boys and Girls and Ashok Hall.
For the past six months the existing traffic pattern in front of all these schools has been studied and the survey results have been transferred into a stimulation.
