AICTE (All India Council of Technical Education) has recently indicated about making the JEE-Mains the single entrance test for undergraduate BE/ B. Tech courses in the country. Currently, the JEE-Mains are used to admit students to the CFTI’s (Centrally funded Institutes) of the likes of IIT’s, NIT’s and IIT’s. AICTE chairman, Anil D Sahasrabudhe when enquired about the developments replied that the execution will be time taking and is still in planning stages because the JEE-Main is more aligned to the CBSE syllabus and presently, different states are having different boards, each following different curriculum, thus making it difficult to implement the proposal straight away.
It is a common thing that like medical, engineering aspirants also end up writing multiple entrance tests for several non-central institution. For instance, students in Karnataka write at the least four entrances—CET, ComedK, JEE and entrances of other deemed universities. The chairman further declared on a stricter note that the AICTE officials will be visiting engineering colleges with lack of infrastructure, low student strength and lack of faculty and equipment and after finding the flaws, will not think twice before closing down those colleges. He explained that many a college applies to shut down, and this new procedure will only help them reduce the ordeal. Moreover, the amount required for closure approval has been slashed to only 50000 from 3 lakhs.
As per the new rule, the intake capacity of seats in engineering colleges, which don’t have accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), will not be increased, and AICTE will increase the intake capacity of engineering colleges which have NBA accreditation.
