Madhyamik result 2016 – A village rejoices on school success after 150 years

Meteldanga, a village in Birbhum’s Mayureswar Block I, 56 km from Shantiniketan, took a century and a half to raise its first successful Madhyamik examinees. The village is feeling overjoyed because four of its children have cleared the school-leaving exam.

Four of them who cleared Madhyamik are- Khukumoni Tudu,18, Sumi Maddi,17, Saheb Maddi ,16, and Mangal Murmu,16. Khukumoni scored 33 per cent, Sumi 31 while Saheb and Mangal 29 per cent.

A marginal farmer, said, “Before these four, no one from here went to high school.” He added, “We are farmers, we can’t afford to neglect our work and take the children to school every day.”

However, a positive change took place when a local NGO, Mallarpur Nalsuva opened a pre-primary school-cum- crèche in the village which broadened into a Shishu Shiksha Kendra with financial help from the Sarva Shikshan Abhiyam from 2002.

Khukumoni and Sumi had earlier taken the board exam but failed to succeed.

Khukomoni said, “From around 2005, the dropout levels fell sharply because of the awareness spread by the NGO that ran the crèche.”

The district administrator will praise the four students. A cultural event will be organized soon in their honour.

It’s nice to see how times are changing for the good and the NGO is making its mark by helping students.
