With the advent of newer avenues for students to pursue as profession, the Non-Mainstream Career options for students are gaining centre stage. Aditya Pandit, a class X student of Calcutta International School has decided to sign up with the Cambridge Curriculum, which he believes is going to give him a better chance to hone his instrumental music skill. Similar is the case with Roshni Srinivasan ,who wants to study psychology after Plus II and also has an interest in film studies, for which CIE or the Cambridge Curriculum seems to be the perfect option.
The Cambridge advanced Curriculum or CIE has recently been very popular among career oriented students. The preference was more evident at a Knowledge Seminar hosted by the Calcutta International School. As explained by Munmun Nath, principal of the school, more students favour the CIE over the IBDP(International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme) because it is less expensive and rigorous. This shift in trend is clear from the statistics which show that in 2015-16 academic session, 40 students opted for the CIE and 20 opted for IBDP. This curriculum is aimed for individuals like Aditya who has specialized in playing different kinds of musical instruments.
The Cambridge advanced course will put less pressure on him with only 4 subjects to study at ‘+2’ thereby allowing him to pursue his interests, says Aditya. Nishant Todi, a class X student, mentioned how geared up he is to pursue CIE, an international curriculum and that how it would also allow him to go for entrance exams for premier foreign varsities. The Seminar at CIS was attended by around 100 students and teachers from South City International School, The Heritage School and the Delhi Public School, Ruby Park besides the host school. Samitava Mukherjee, head of the math department at CIS, cited the survey report that showed there are more than 10000 Cambridge schools in around 160 countries with over 1.5 lakh learners. He further explained that by clearing any three subjects, he/she will be eligible for admission to colleges. Parents also seemed supportive of the CIE as they feel that it’s a great way to excel in academics and find a suitable job as well.
