The civic body is planning to extend the ‘plastic-free’ experiment to all its schools. The students of the schools will be asked to bring plastic waste from their home to the institution once in a month.
The civic body will collect and recycle them.
City-based Sagar Mitra organization has implemented the project in some city schools. Recently, its members told the Union minister of state for environment, Prakash Javadekar, about the experiment.
Pune municipal commissioner Kunal Kumar said the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) was planning to extend the experiment to all the civic schools in the next few months.
The move comes against the backdrop of the central government’s ‘Plastic Waste-free India’ campaign which is to be launched from the city on 13th February 2016 to create awareness about the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016. The campaign would later be extended to the rest of the country.
