Uma Mahato scored 91.7% in Madhyamik 2015 though being poverty-stricken. She stiches around 1,000 sal leaf plates and fetches Rs. 100. The leaves have to be collected from the forest on whose edge she lives along with her family. Uma spends five to six hours a day collecting and stitching leaves. She studies at night as she has to devote her time making plates. Uma was awarded at The Telegraph School Awards for Excellence 2015, presented by Adamas University, in association with Parle-G, in its 20th edition.
