Students and teachers of a school on the northern fringes of Kolkata will donate blood on 12th March to ensure that a student of higher secondary of the school, suffering from thalassaemia, receives free transfusions for the coming 18 months. Debika Karmakar, the 21year old student has been on transfusion for the last nine years and her father had appealed to the school for support. The school authorities had called upon every student and staffer to donate blood so that the blood bank do not charge her. More than 70 students and teachers of Palta Shantinagar High School, will take part in the initiative. Camps are organized fairly regularly, along with other efforts to raise money for unprivileged and ailing children of the area. Debika, who needs a blood transfusion every 15 days, is touched by the gesture. She aspires to join the Government Art College.
