Several prominent schools of Kolkata are now requesting students and parents to not just consider science as an option for their wards who cleared Madhyamik, but to look into the other streams such as commerce and arts as well. The age-old belief that studying science alone is the path to a guaranteed and secured future is no longer a truth. In fact, to spread the awareness amongst students and parents, some school authorities have gone so far as printing and displaying flexes and banners for the purpose.

Drawing from their experience, teachers explain, that every year a great number of talented students do not get the chance to get admitted for science even after a successful result. In addition to this, many schools lack the proper infrastructure required for science, whereas seats are vacant in the arts and commerce stream.

Every student wants to study science, but it is pretty impossible to accommodate all of them. The most difficult task is however, to make the students and parents understand that  equal opportunities are there for arts and commerce stream students as well. Ironically, subjects such as social philosophy, journalism, public communication, police and public rights are gaining in popularity. But according to the principals, unlike CBSE and ICSE, the subject choices available to students are minimal.

What is the alternative then?

The authorities of the respective schools are arranging, on their own, Career Counselling Sessions, banners, posters, flexes, festoons to increase the awareness among the parents and students, which in itself is, unheard off for government funded and aided schools. So is the case with Sakhwat Memorial Girls High school. The principal and school authorities are also receiving help from few NGO’s in setting up temporary counseling set-up

But a few are there who disapprove of this idea bacuase they think parents don’t give enough weightage to the teachers in such matters. In fact, according to the Head teacher of Hindu School, Mr Tushar Kanti Samanta not only the science stream, but the exponential increase in the number of successful candidates in Madhyamik is a practical situation for all the three streams. If the number of successful candidates keep on increasing in the manner they are, then WBCHSE will have to consider bringing in new subjects and promoting more Secondary schools in the state.
