Due to the intense heat wave and torrid Kolkata weather the government aided and funded schools of the State are going to remain closed for two months. School Education Secretary, Mr. Arnab Ray has sent a notification on Wednesday to the heads of Madhyamik, Higher Secondary and Primary education committees which made the matter transparent.
In the notification sent by Arnab Ray, it is mentioned that schools will have their Summer Vacations start early , from 19th May,2016 . However, no information has been provided on the date of reopening as of yet. Before the start of the educational year, the WBBSE and WBCHSE had declared that summer holidays for 2016 will start on 23rd May,2016 and will continue till 11th June,2016. But due to the rise in temperature, The Secretary of School Education declared on 9th April ,that schools shall remain suspended from 11th April onwards. But due to a drop in mercury thanks to the’ Kal-Baisakhi’, there were talks about reopening the schools for the purpose of completing the syllabus and taking the scheduled summative assessments and unit tests for the Madhyamik and Primary students respectively.
However, the School Education Secretary, Mr. Arnab Ray in his declaration , stated that students will have to be present for two days on 16th and 17th of May. In those two days, the students need to be briefed in details about the curriculum that they have for their academic year and must also be handed over the schedule for their formative and summative assessments. WBBSE called for an urgent meeting with the curriculum committee today, on Thursday,12th May. The decisions made will be communicated to the schools. Furthermore, Teachers vacation period, which was also another issue at hand seems to be resolved by the official declaration stating that summer vacations will start from 19th May.
