In most of the city schools, children are allowed to bring in small amount of money to spend on food at canteen. However keeping in mind that the students require to know the value of money, schools are now holding special meetings with parents and are adding value education classes on money matters to the curriculum. If good money habits are inculcated in kids from a very young age, they will remain on the right track.
In St James’ School, surprise checks are conducted to see whether children are carrying more cash than permitted. The junior boys are allowed to bring upto Rs 20, while those in senior school can bring up to Rs 50. Junior boys spending money in the canteen have to make sure that the food is shared with a friend. The school also encourages students to hold birthday parties with classmates after school hours, where subsidised food comes from the canteen. The birthday boy has to compulsorily invite some children from the evening school for the underprivileged.
In Loreto Dharamtolla, only children of classes IX and X are allowed to carry money for the school canteen. The younger children have to bring food from home. The school discourages children from bringing ready food like tiffin cakes and teachers ensure that children get home-cooked meals at lunch.
