Triumphant result in the West Bengal Higher Secondary Results 2016 has done justice to the toil and tears of two girls—Kakon Dolui and Sabnam Baidya, two successful candidates of the HS whose success story is bound to give the readers new hopes and goosebumps.
Kakon Dolui from Khashmorah High School, Howrah is the daughter of an embroidery worker Bikash Dolui. The family depended on Bikash’s inadequate income for feeding the three mouths and also continue their daughters education. Such was their condition that in months with lesser than regular income, they had to borrow money from their neighbours. But the grim and dull lives of the Dolui family breathed fresh air as the news of their daughters successful result came across to her parents. Kakon Dolui has not just achieved a blistering 92% , but has also topped her class.
Unlike the city-kids, Kakon’s economic background doesn’t even allow her the permission to dream big. She explained why she cannot take up engineering though she wants to. She has a little brother who studies in class V. So pursuing a costly undergraduate course is nothing short of a luxury that she can’t afford. But even then, she has not lost hope and wants to further her education with physics honors at Presidency University. Though her father is worried about how he is going to fund his daughter’s higher studies, Kakon showed great character as she clearly indicated her motive to chip in and help her family by giving tuitions. Her mother, Dolly Dolui was teary eyed by her daughter’s grand success despite the hardships. Recalling the difficulties her daughter has been through, she thanks the teachers and the school from where Kakon has passed Madhyamik for being so helpful as Kakon used to get books and other necessary assistance from them. She would go to the library and sit down to study the reference books. Indeed , Kakon Dolui is not comparable to any other student of her school, not because of her very poor and difficult background from which she hails but due to her ‘never-say-die’ attitude that has bent the wheel of fortune towards her.
Another girl, with a similar story is Sabnam Baidya from Krishnachandrapur High School, Mathurapur, South 24 Parganas. Her mother is ailing and therefore Shabnam is responsible for doing all the household chores. She wakes up at 6 and completes her house-work within 10 A.M, just in time to get to school. After coming back at 4.30 P.M she does the remaining chores and sat for studying. Despite such a long, tiring and demanding schedule, Shabnam is known to study till 1.30 A.M everyday. She lives with her mother, father a baby sister and her brother. In spite of such troubled circumstances, Shabnam managed to get 83.4% and aspires to continue uptill Phd in English. But Shabnam like many daughters of our country, is being forced to get married. Her family has been looking for a good match for her as they have made it clear that with 3000 odd monthly income and so many mouths to feed, they cannot afford to admit her in a college. Her school principal, Chandan Kumar Maiti seemed supportive of her. He hinted that with a little bit of help , girls like Shabnam can go places.
