A total of 10,65,179 candidates registered for CBSE Class XII Examination 2016  across the country this year –an increase of about 2.38% over last year. The success rate is also higher this year at 83.05% against 82% last year. But many a meritorious student are finding themselves in a new state of bother this year. The English marks have been substantially lower for the city kids, somewhere around the 80s whereas marks for other subjects are nearly 97% +. This discrepancy has caused a bad impact on the aggregate scores of the students.
According to Rita Chatterjee, principal of Apeejay Schools at Park street and salt lake, she said that the availability of new subjects as optional has caused such a flip in the average scores across streams, specially in humanities where students getting 96% was considered extra humane even a few years ago. Full marks in subjects such as fashion studies and legal studies have shot up the percentage for the students. This fact is evidenced by Mahadevi Birla World Academy vice-principal Nupur Ghosh who said that with the advent of new subjects such as theatre studies and legal studies , students of the school have fared pretty well with 2/3rd scoring 90 and above in the two new subjects.
South Point Education Society’s Krishna Damani is happy with the high aggregates that the majority of students have secured. She said that more than half the examinees, 60% in fact, have scored over 90%  and sixteen students, or 11.85%, have scored over 95%. It’s been only a couple of years that the school has  switched to CBSE but our teachers have been thoroughly trained. That has yielded results. DPS Siliguri is one of the schools that has done well. Of the 617 students that took the examinations, 76 scored above 90%, 171above 80% and 157 above 70%.
But with this overloaded bracket of 90%+ students, A lot many good students will now be forced to consider several uncharted lines which according to a few teachers is actually a blessing in disguise. Though the major chunk of good scorers will end up in their chosen college, but a number of success stories will find themselves wanting. Though the results have been as per trend as forecasted beforehand due to the gradual increase in the competitive level in the previous years, but many seasoned teachers and educationists are advising students to take up the challenges sportingly. Students can now take up streams or lines which hitherto have been neglected just to” go with the flow”.
