CBSE Urges Schools to Keep Canteens Healthy and Say No to High Fat Foods

In a circular issued to all CBSE affiliated schools across the country, the Central Board of Secondary Education has asked all its schools to ensure that school canteens sell only healthy snacks ad consumption of food high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS) like carbonated drinks, pizzas, burgers, chips and confectionary is stopped with immediate effect. Schools have been urged to form a ‘School Canteen Management Committee’ having about 7-10 members including teachers. Parents, students and canteen operators to implement and monitor the guidelines to ensure HFSS food isn’t consumed by the students. The schools have been asked to monitor the canteens and inspect the tiffin that students bring from school that it has only healthy snacks. Schools have also been urged to take all necessary steps to ensure that HFSS foods are not available at least 200 metres of the school.
