ENTERPRISING ELEVEN – Building Girl Power

ELEVEN girls from the 2014 batch of Howrah-based Don Bosco Self Employment Research Institute, a three year Civil Engineering technician course, affiliated to the CISCE and WBUT are a part of a novel initiative christened ‘Nar iprise’ (a combination of Nari and Enterprise), brainchild of the institute’s director, Brother T V Mathew. According to him, several girls fail to reach their success in this stream and has to face harassment. So he decided to make entrepreneurs out of them. These eleven girls, barely teens and their visiting cards says they are in the business of ‘construction services’. The eleven of them formed six companies and specialize in modular kitchen and modular baths in apartment blocks.

The seed capital for their first project was put up by the institute, which paid Rs 300 a day as a stipend and gave them an equal share of profit. There individual earning came more than Rs. 12,000 a month. These girls are looking to make more profits out of their work.
