The IIT-JEE Advanced Results 2016 saw 5 aspirants from the state bagging ranks within the top 500, and one out of them is within the top 100. This is a positive improvement for the WBJEE Board as because all of the 5 also feature in the top 8 of the WBJEE which evidently shows that the gap between the syllabus and pattern of the two competitive exams have been reduced to a great extent. In earlier years, most Bengal IIT-JEE toppers had focused only on the IIT entrance test, rather than WBJEE, because of the different curriculum. According to a Board official, the syllabus and question pattern has undergone a sea change in WBJEE, which was the need of the hour.

The state toppers with their competitive rank is listed below:

  • Tamoghna Ghosh
  1. IIT – 93
  2. WBJEE – 6
  • Arkadeb Sengupta
  1. IIT – 138
  2. WBJEE – 8
  • Yashwardhan Didwani
  1. IIT – 415
  2. WBJEE – 1
  • Shounak Nath
  1. IIT – 417
  2. WBJEE – 4
  • Arpan Konar
  1. IIT – 467
  2. WBJEE – 3

Tamoghna was always a rank holder at his school, South Point, and as per his mother, they aren’t very surprised with Tamoghna’s high rank in both the competitive. But Tamoghna wanted his share of sleep and believes that the brain needs to be recharged to work properly. He likes sports, and is a fan of Roger Federer. His mother also explained that like most other boys, he also didn’t really bury himself in books and loves to paint. But what he had was a target-oriented study schedule since class XI and his mother also informed about his time management skill. He would prefer to study computer engineering or electrical engineering at IIT-Bombay or IIT-Delhi.
The 136th rank-holder in IIT-JEE (Advanced), Arkadeb Sengupta from Don Bosco Park Circus  is a Shibpur resident, both of whose parents are teachers at IISc . Arkadeb apart from his competitive exams, also came third in his ISC, in which he scored 99%. Arkadeb, too, stressed the importance of scheduled study, who himself wasn’t very confident of his rank. He however mentions that he loves reading, particularly the stories of O’Henry, and playing the sarod. He is also watching both Copa America and Euro Cup matches. However , he is still undecided about his next step and says will only decide after consulting with his parents, who, virtue of their profession are probably the best people to guide their son. Upon enquiry about what was the key thing according to him that helped him bag such stellar ranks, he mentioned about his holiday schedule of studying for 9 hours or more every day and giving equal importance to each subject.
The DPS Megacity student, son of a businessman, had a fair share of appraisal on topping the State Joint Entrance in Engineering, and as if that wasn’t good enough, lo and behold his IIT JEE rank of 415! That’s right. Yashwardhan Didwania is making regular headlines it seems. Aspiring to go to IIT Delhi because of greater career opportunities according to him, he spelled out his success mantra to be his 7 hour study schedule, daily. He mentioned how his parents had motivated him to prep for his exams and is a believer that hard work will definitely pay off. He did however mentioned that his only hobby included playing with his brother.
Shounak Nath from Hemsheela Model School in Durgapur & Arpan Konar, also from Durgapur’s Bidhan Chandra Institution have both made it to the top 500 merit list in IIT JEE. However, both have different aspirations. Shounak even after his stellar rank in IIT JEE and WBJEE has decided to go to IISc Bangalore for studying Pure Science, whereas, Arpan is eyeing for a spot at IIT Kharagpur in the Computer Science branch. Arpan is considering the closeness of IIT KGP from his home as a weighing in factor. He loves watching football and said wasn’t really a ‘schedule-following’ guy. However, Shounak stresses on practicing exam questions as the key factor for any aspirant to crack such competitive exams.
