As conventional as it can be, the much talked about Inter School Competition 2016, The MUN 2016 was this time hosted by The Heritage School. Although over the years topics such as Utopian timelines, TV Shows and surprise committees have been dealt with, the Heritage MUN chapter was traditional and conventional, unlike the previous years. There were overall 12 schools participating, the event, including few of the renowned ones such as Don Bosco Park Circus, Loreto House, St. James’ School, St. Xavier’s Collegiate School and Calcutta Boys’ School, to name but a few. Total 5 committees were formed to discuss and resolve world crises.
The United Nations Security Council assessed the principle of the Responsibility to Protect and discuss the impacts in the current geopolitical scenario, while the Lok Sabha Committee debated on the bills to be proposed, amended or abrogated in the All India Political Parties Meet. This event appeared very realistic with the participants role-playing politician, complete with look attire and exhaustive background research. On the other hand, The Executive Committee of the National Security Council of the US featured 25 members who discussed measures to counter missile threat from Cuba along with the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly which was the biggest of the three day meet. Some of the issues in the agenda included prevention of militarization and peaceful use of outer space.
The best delegate of the MUN was awarded to Anuragh Dasgupta of St. Xavier’s College School, who was quoted saying that the MUN had committees which “worked and functioned exactly as the actual ones would”. Himself an experienced MUN campaigner, he was looking forward for this THSMUN 2016. However the Best Delegation trophy was won by the boys from DBPC (Don Bosco Park Circus) and the Outstanding Delegation Trophy was bagged by the St. James’ School. Prompt response to challenging situations and exhaustive research was one of the reasons which was cited as responsible for their achievement. Rahul Das, a class XII student of the host school, who also happens to be the secretary general of the MUN in THSMUN 2016, he was endowed with a lot many responsibilities. He pointed out the experience he attained and how much he learned from this MUN. Similar to what he said, his school principal Seema Sapru also think that the MUNs are a huge benefit for the students because it gives them the make-shift role-play environment of world politics where they research and ponder over the critical problems which plague the globe. Making friends, sharing ideas, shouldering responsibility, are some of the trademarks of this ever popular event among the students.
