The State Government had sent out directives to reduce the burden on young children. Loading and unloading heavy school bags poses a problem on students. They carry 20-30% heavier bags than the prescribed limit. School bags have adopted a few ways to reduce bag weight:

Text Books on Flash Drive: City schools have requested parents to scan textbooks and transfer them to a pen drive. This will help to reduce lessons in classrooms and reduce weight added due to heavy textbooks.

Bags sans Water bottle: Even a 2 litre water bottle that a child carries adds to the bag’s weight. Some schools brought up this issue and discussed during the parent-teacher meeting and asked parents not to send water bottles and use school water purifiers instead.

Lockers: Lockers are good options when it comes to reducing the bag weight. Setting up lockers for individual students to store all their books may be difficult. Lockers for craft materials and extra-curricular activities, and storage for sports equipment, will be provided.

Several schools are taking steps in order to reduce school bag weight. Among them, several schools have already implemented rules while others are still working on it.
