Schools to become cyclone shelters

The disaster management department has assigned PWD to implement the second phase of a World Bank-funded project to turn 150 schools which are located in South and North 24 PGS and East Midnapore into cyclone shelters. Some of the major project components comprise of cyclone forecast and warning system, cyclone risk mitigation and capacity building in the coastal zones. The major objective of the project is to reduce cyclone vulnerability in coastal areas by developing necessary infrastructure. The most important of them are: development of multi-purpose cyclone shelter (MPCS) and laying of underground cable covering 60 km stretch in Digha and Shankarpur. The unit along with PWD and WBSEDCL are responsible for coordination and monitoring of the project works.
