The Finance Department has cleared the release of 153.94 crore for providing canvas shoes to students from Class I-VI in state-run primary schools. This was done a day after the Chief Minister instructed Education Minister Partha Chatterjee for making arrangements for footwear after seeing some children walking barefoot. It can take some time to provide shoes to every individual student as according to government officials Bengal has around 50 lakh students in primary schools. The shoe distribution might start from Class IV.
