While the Union HRD ministry is in process of formulating a new education policy and with the consultation process going on, several states pressed their recommendations to implement Right to Education (RTE) till class 10. Presently, RTE is limited to students of up to class eight.The states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Goa made certain recommendations to the Union Government constituted `National Education Policy Committee’ (NEPC). Some of these maintained that if RTE was implemented up till class 10, gross enrollment levels would increase and the dropout ratio would decrease. Besides, the states also recommended that the scope of RTE must be extended so that students from rural areas are also benefitted.
