February-March; the months of exam, and when it comes to this season, nutritious rules are flung out of the window. Exam nutrition is not about counting calories. Poor nutrition during this season can lead to poor health and can be detrimental to one’s ability to concentrate. So maintaining an exam diet is always advisable so that the body functions at its optimum level. Let’s check out some of the tips:

  • Nix the Junk: Avoid giving your child too much comfort food. Rich and heavy food are harder to digest and divert blood from brain. Brain requires blood as it brings oxygen along with it, which is vital for its efficient functioning.
  • Push for Protein: Protein works in helping the brain retain both information and recall it. Protein like dal, egg, fish chicken and quinoa helps a student get the best out of preparation.
  • Caffeine: The lesser the dependence on caffeine, the better it is for your child. For children, caffeine levels are at times hard to estimate. An over-dose of caffeine induces side-effects like loose motions, palpitations and an even more serious one like respiratory distress, vomiting and convulsions. Too much consumption of caffeine can be counterintuitive to exam process and can bring about an inability to focus and concentrate. Caffeine sources include energy drinks, black tea, coffee and caffeine tablets.
  • Water: Adequate hydration is crucial for the proper functioning of the body, including brain and dehydration can bring in headaches and tiredness. At least 8-10 glasses or 2 litres of water is recommended every day.
  • Sleep: If a student does not sleep well, his/her brain will not work properly. While at rest, brain organises everything one has taught and while awake, it almost work as a jukebox. The fewer hours you sleep, the lesser time your brain gets to organise its short-term and long-term memory

So it is always advisable to maintain a balanced diet along with proper sleep so that you can write a good exam.
