Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission has yet again made headlines with their stellar performance in the West Bengal Higher Secondary Examination 2016. Out of the 56 students who made it to the merit list, 8 was from Narendrapur only—one 6th, two 7th,four 8th and one 10th rank holder. Also, out of the 76 candidates of the school who wrote the exam from this school, 59 of them have achieved a score of 90%+.

When asked about the success recipe of the school in such exams, the most important reason cited unanimously by both the parents and teachers was—Less dependence on Guide Books and following the Missions’ guidelines. The fact that students have to stay on campus for 9 months further strengthens the arguments. They don’t have the opportunity to take external tuitions, and learning is therefore mainly “peer-based” learning, where students learn from and teach to others. Moreover, the teachers of the mission teach the students from the very first day of how to make notes and utilize them. This helps the students throughout their study period and is one of the reasons why students don’t feel the need for guide books. They simply try to follow and learn whatever is taught inside the class. Apart from this, other healthy habits such as frequent assessments to make a student understand where he needs to work is very effective too.

According to the parents, “ Whatever is taught in class is enough. Students are also prepared for competitive exams due to the several mock exams arranged by the school themselves.”

To sum it up, one can say that regular assessment, peer-based learning, refraining students from taking external tuition, healthy habit forming such as note making and explicitly asking students to avoid guide books are the major reasons to which their consistent and excellent results be attributed to.
